A Holistic Approach for Optimal Pre-Planning of Multi-Path Standardized Taxiing Routes

Standardized Taxiing Routes (STRs) are defined as published taxiing-in and taxiing-out routes for aircraft between gates runways, aiming at improving ground movement safety busy or complex airports. Most of the STRs specify only one path each O–D (Origin–Destination) pair, which compromises flexibility route choice in time-varying traffic scenarios. In this paper, we present a holistic approach planning validating Multi-Path (MPSTRs) based on System-Optimal Traffic Assignment (SOTA), by firstly defining flow-based congestion cost runway, taxiway, sectorized apron operation macroscopic level. A human-in-the-loop experiment comprised six scenarios follows to investigate impact pre-planned MPSTRs human controllers’ performance. Results confirm positive effect taxiing performance without increasing workload, also implies that would be promising balancing efficiency STRs-based dynamic routing optimization substantial investment.
